Opal mining information for the Australia Industry around Lightning Ridge.     I am writing to inform you of recent changes to the regulation of ancillary mining activities and a proposed extension of the transitional arrangements for communal mullock dumps. Ancillary Mining Activities (AMAs) AMAs are activities that are ancillary to, or support, mining operations such as opal puddling or the stockpiling of mullock. These activities were previously referred to as mining purposes. Recent changes to the framework for regulating AMAs came into effect on 27 June 2017 to clarify its operation and scope. The changes provide a transition period for AMAs established prior to 15 November 2010. Miners have until 14 November 2017 to seek authorisation through a mining lease or mineral claim, otherwise they will be in contravention of the Mining Act 1992. Communal Mullock Dumps In some areas, opal mining mullock is stockpiled in communal areas (known as ‘communal mullock dumps’). Communal mullock dumps are designated AMAs under the Mining Act 1992. The Department of Planning and Environment recognises that many titleholders are utilising communal mullock dumps to support their mining operations. The department is currently considering an extension to the transitional period for up to two years for communal mullock dumps that were established prior to 15 November 2010. The proposed extension will enable the department and miners to work together to ensure positive outcomes for industry, the community and the environment. Only communal mullock dumps that are nominated to the department and meet the requirements will benefit from the extension to the transitional period. How you can help We would like to hear from you about which communal mullock dumps should be included in the extended transitional period (provided they meet the criteria identified in the nomination form).   Opal mining information for the Australia Industry around Lightning Ridge.   A set of frequently asked questions is available on our website. I first started mining the most famous opal gemstone location in the world, known by the name of 3 mile or lunatic Hill about 40 years ago, there were still some of the original mining prospectors, British European discoverers and pioneers of this region of Australia, still leaving in town when I first arrived. The streets were not paved in the township at Lightning Ridge, the digger’s hotel was a rough place for young new guys, plenty of men looking to test a young guy out, or maybe knock him out, gambling and hard drinking males that look like they belong in a while Western Lawless place where shootouts happen in town not only at noon. But the hokers had left the opal mining town, there was no women in town to be seen the boom days were gone and the oldest profession in the world had no reason to stay all the money business had left town.   Documentary very old video of 3 mile and Lightning Ridge opal miners.     Australian Opal Centre official state museum . Australian opal mines it does not particularly matter about the height of the roof as long as you can get easy access to the roof, as this is usually your best chance of finding opal under the sandstone between that and that clay level. You will find pockets of material and maybe opal’s and even seen in the floor of your claim, there are many methods of working safe underground if you need to have wide drives then you can use wood supports and wood props which are readily found around the leases. I would recommend the Australian cypress pine which has great strength and is quite tolerant to water , many people like to leave the bottom section of their drives and dig wider around the roof this method is no different to removing all the clay and having wide drives it will get more dangerous as the clay dry and starts cracking. All colors plus blue opals when all the clay has been clearly washed out of the agitator barrel make sure you turn the engine down so it is running very slow as there will only be solids left in the agitator and you do not want to break any single color fire opal or multicolor fire in the barrel. Put the agitator into reverse and naturally all the material will come up and out and run down the chute to your processing table, make sure you have a good sorting table with access to water and I cannot emphasize  tailing out should be done extremely slowly” patient is a virtue.   You do not want to miss blue opals or any colors, this is where a lot of businesses make a huge mistake .   Many people noodling often days after looking for what you have missed  please this final job you must do in the middle of the day where there is plenty of light and sun available , good luck hope you find lots of gem black because you will be very rich wisely invested you can live off your interest for the rest of your life.   One more time sorting through the  tailing’s this truly is most important job because it is so easy to miss seeing stones color amongst the material when you are sorting through this final stage of opal mining.   It is important to have a 12 meter water holes handy  to keep the tailings very clean and wet you must rotate the material looking for color the whole time on a sunny day if you follow this procedure and have patience and you are working country...
